Textual analysis of "Q" Magazine Front Cover April 2010

In this post I will analysis the front cover of the April 2010 issue, of "Q" magazine. The cover story for this issue is on the controversial pop artist "Lady GaGa".
Language - Conventionally the most dominating element of the front cover is the main photograph, in this case pop artist Lady GaGa. The mise-en-scene of the photo shoot is very interesting and controversial, especially the costume. The costume is a pair of plain black trousers, with spikes emerging from the thigh areas, and then a pair of gloves that resemble the character Edward Scissor hands. Her top half is naked, with her hands strategically placed to cover her breasts. The unconventional style of dress is used, as always with Lady GaGa, to show her rebellious and different fashion style, which always seeks to shock and interest people in what she will wear next. This I believe comments on her personality and career, which she always likes to shock with. For example at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, she covered herself in blood and imitated suicide. There was a media storm following this, with her been criticized as "romanticizing suicide" The Edward Scissor hands resemblance in the gloves, in my opinion is commenting on how GaGa, is a character that is different, strange and an outsider from the celebrity world, which she frequently discusses in interviews. Furthermore a strap-on penis is visible on her leg, this has been used to cause controversy and receive media attention, which it did with this issue of Q been banned in the Barnes & Noble retailer, however it is also used to comment on the attacks and rumours of GaGa, having a penis and been an hermaphrodite. It comments in the way, that it shows the audience she can deal with these rumours, play along with them to get people talking even more about the subject. The colour of this issue is black, white and red. The main headline, follows convention with been the most dominate text on the cover, in this case particulary the "LADY GAGA" bit. The typeface of the main headline is an serif one, and the "Risen" part of the headline has an oblique effect to it, with it slanting slightly to the right side.
Institution - Q is an UK based commerical music magazine, and it is published by the Bauer Media Group. Q Magazine has both it's own website - http://www.qthemusic.com/ and a televison show that broadcasts in the UK "Q TV".
Ideology -
Audience - Q magazine is particulary concentrated in the UK, however it is also sold throughout the US in retailers such as Barnes & Noble. June 2007 saw the magazine reach a circulation of 130,000.
